A Tradition of Pride, Community & Patriot Spirit
For more than six decades, Red Land Midget Football & Cheer has proudly served families throughout the West Shore community by providing young athletes with opportunities to grow, compete, and build lifelong character through football and cheerleading. Built on tradition, volunteerism, and community pride, our organization has become more than a youth sports program—it has become a cornerstone of the Red Land community.
Founded in the early 1960s by local veteran and community advocate George H. Mikos, Red Land Midget Football & Cheer was created with a simple but powerful mission: to provide children in the West Shore School District and surrounding communities with a safe, structured, and positive environment to develop athletic skills, confidence, teamwork, and leadership.
George Mikos’ vision extended beyond the field. He played an instrumental role in securing and developing the organization’s longtime home field at 520 Locust Road in New Cumberland, creating a place where generations of families would gather to cheer on future Patriots. What began as a local youth football program quickly became a lasting tradition deeply woven into the fabric of the community.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Red Land Midget Football established itself as a respected community program serving youth from New Cumberland, Lewisberry, and surrounding West Shore communities. Built through the dedication of volunteer coaches, board members, parents, and local supporters, the organization focused on teaching fundamentals, sportsmanship, accountability, and teamwork both on and off the field.
In 1988, Red Land entered a new chapter in its history by joining the Keystone Midget Football Conference (KMFC) during a major period of league expansion. This transition brought greater structure, stronger regional competition, and memorable rivalries with respected programs throughout Central Pennsylvania. For decades, Red Land teams competed proudly within the KMFC, helping shape generations of athletes while building traditions that remain strong today.
As youth sports evolved across the region, Red Land once again embraced growth and progress. During the 2010s, the KMFC and the Catholic Football Association merged to form the Cumberland Valley Youth Football Association (CFA), creating one of Central Pennsylvania’s premier youth football organizations. Today, Red Land Midget Football & Cheer proudly competes as a member of the CFA Federal Conference, continuing its commitment to athlete safety, player development, and competitive excellence.
A Cheer Program Built on Spirit & Excellence
Cheerleading has always been an essential part of the Red Land tradition. Originally focused on supporting athletes from the sidelines and building school spirit, the cheer program has grown into a dynamic and highly skilled athletic program of its own.
Today, Red Land cheerleaders develop skills in cheers, dance, jumps, motions, teamwork, and stunting fundamentals while continuing to energize Patriot football games with enthusiasm and spirit. Beyond the sidelines, Red Land cheer squads have earned recognition through participation in local and regional competitions, including notable success at national events such as the Reach The Beach National Championships, where squads have achieved multiple first- and second-place finishes.
Cheer teams are organized by age divisions that align with the football program—including Flag/Smurf, Pee Wee, Pony, and Midget—allowing athletes to grow and progress alongside teammates and peers in a supportive environment.
More Than a Program — A Family Tradition
For generations, Red Land Midget Football & Cheer has been powered by families, volunteers, and community support. From Friday night lights and fall pep rallies to parades, competitions, and championship memories, the organization continues to create experiences that extend far beyond the game itself.
Our mission remains rooted in the same values that shaped this organization from the beginning:
- Community Pride — Building lifelong connections and representing the Red Land community with pride.
- Character & Development — Teaching discipline, teamwork, accountability, and leadership through athletics.
- Safety & Progression — Providing a structured, age-appropriate environment where athletes can safely grow and develop.
- Spirit & Tradition — Uniting football and cheer to create one Patriot family.
As we continue building on a proud tradition that spans generations, Red Land Midget Football & Cheer remains committed to preparing young athletes not only for future success in sports, but for success in life.
